What’s hot in kids’ toys-find out with me

Visit the Chicago Toy and Game Fair on Nov. 23-24 or follow me for information on what’s hot for Christmas this year.

It has started. A Toys R Us catalog showed up at our house last week and the “I wants” and the “I hope Santa brings me thats” have begun. I have no idea what the trendy toys are, but I’m hoping to find out at the Toy and Game Fair in Chicago in just two weeks.

Up until now, I’ve been able to avoid the catalog nonsense, mostly because my kids didn’t read and they were really too little to understand the concept. This year, things have changed.

We got rid of cable a while ago and rely on what our antenna can pick up and Netflix. This means there are very few commercials being played in our house. Gone are the days of toy ads every five minutes and all the “I want that…” that I heard after every commercial, but it also makes finding Christmas gifts a little more of a challenge too. Not just because they can’t tell me what they want, but also because I don’t feel like I know what toys are good for them.

My criteria:
No more electronics. We have enough.
Nothing involving paint, markers or PlayDoh. They get enough of that from other people and it’s too much to take out on a random weekday.
Educational without being educational. Things like Legos, Light Brights, etc are good examples.
Stuff that will last. I have three kids and I don’t want to have to replace these toys every year.

Just as I was trying to decipher how I would crack the toy code, I got an invitation to the Toy and Game Fair in Chicago. This is my chance to learn more about the hottest stuff out there, play with some of it and see what interests my kids. So I’m packing up my crew and heading to Chicago in two weeks to take a look at what’s out there.

The good news is, I will be able to share it with you from the event through my Twitter and Instagram accounts and larger write-ups when I get back. The better news is that you can join me in Chicago. I have a family pack of tickets to give away. If you are interested in going, leave a comment below and I will let you in on the details.
