Disclaimer: I was provided with a pair of MaternaSole inner soles to try out during my pregnancy. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
Every part of my body hurt during my pregnancy. My back was a mess, my hips were sore, my calves were swollen and my feet took the brunt of it.
In May, I saw a tweet from MrsWebersNeighborhood about the MaternaSole inserts for pregnant women and it sounded like Heaven. Developed by local podiatrist Dr. Larry Brown, who is based in Center Line, Mich and Detroit-based OB/GYN, Dr. Bernard Gonik, the innersoles are specifically designed for pregnant women, including non-breakable air cells that provide support and shock absorption to help a woman adjust to her changing body.
I wear custom orthotics designed by my personal podiatrist. However, they are thick, bulky and designed for my “not pregnant” body. Suddenly I was 30 lbs heavier, tipping forward from my heavy belly and on my feet a lot, making me really uncomfortable. My feet were swollen to the point of having creases in my skin and my shoes no longer fit with my bulky custom orthotics.
It was about that time the MaternaSole inserts arrived in the mail. The thin design fit in all of my shoes, in particular my work flats, which meant I was comfortable walking around and I could slip my shoes off under my desk.
The MaternaSoles look like a piece of hard, white plastic that conforms to the shape of your foot. The bottom part is made of unbreakable air bubbles–think bubble wrap. When they first arrived, I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to remove the bubble-wrap type material or leave it on. I figured if it was just packaging, they wouldn’t have cut it to the shape of the insert or glued it on. With the bubbles, I’m not sure how they would hold up over time, but for the few months I used them, they stayed in perfect shape.
The MaternaSoles provided my arches with the extra support they needed given the extra weight and stress on my body. Even now that I have delivered, I’m thinking I might keep these around for my flats. My custom orthotics do not fit in them, but I love to wear them, and I do need the extra support.
The MaternaSoles are $29 and available for shoe sizes 6-11. They are available through a limited number of outlets, including Inner Sole Group. They will be available online in the coming weeks.
